For all those amazing folk that I have met and worked with that have been given this label to carry around with them…

A sea of faces hone in on me,

my face…

the focus of a hundred glaring sights*

my clay -pigeon face awaiting annihilation.

Was it something I said or

was it something I didn’t say?

Please explain…

but then perhaps don’t try ‘cos if you did

and when you have, I will not and have not

understood the existence of such concepts!

My life is lived upon a static board,

black and white and firmly fixed.

Yours is mottled grey with boundaries,

ever changing, ever evolving.

I cannot read between the lines

yet I walk confidently upon them.

In all I do I speak the truth,

to lie for me an impossibility!

Daily I crave reliability, dependability of

structures and patterns my comfort.

With a Physiology highly sensitized,

I struggle to negotiate twists and turns

of a world governed by neurotypicals,

for I have the words “ON THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM”

invisibly tattooed across my forehead.

In the scheme of humankind, head shaking

for the human can be far from kind,

the gifted Savant and Asperger’s custodian

gift their refreshing genius to reign upon this Earth!

Darwin, Mozart, Einstein, Beethoven,

Edison, Jefferson, da Vinci,

.Van Gogh.

Socrates, Shakespeare, Curie, Asimov,

Mendel, Turing, Michelangelo,

Yeats.

There is no such thing as NORMAL : that is an illusion.

*sight (on a gun ) : a device used to assist aligning or aiming a weapon or surveying instrument

clay-pigeon : a saucer shaped piece of baked clay or similar, thrown up in the air from a trap as a target for shooting.

neurotypical : a label for people who are not on the autism spectrum.

Autism Spectrum : a range of conditions from autism to Asperger’s syndrome, characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behaviour.

Savant : a condition in which a person with a mental disability such as an autism spectrum disorder, show profound abilities far in excess of what would be considered to be “normal.”

  2. This one particularly tugged at my heart strings. It’s a topic close to my heart. My 4 year old had speech delay. And we did a lot of tests for him. He has been diagnosed with ADD. Prodigal son I have! 🙂 But the social stigma is terrible here. Thank you for writing and sharing this.

    1. Oh my dear, l meant not to cause you any upset on such a delicate topic. The world would be a boring place if we did not have such gifted incredible people who have the gift to see, feel, and do what us neuro typicals! could never do. There is no such thing as normal!Such folk have rare insight, are so inspirational and have single minded attention to become the geniuses and groundbreakers in this world. They are square pegs that do not fit the round holes that society expects them to fit. Such is the injustice and intolerance in this world. I wish you much strength and love as you and your son navigate your lives through the stigma holding society where you live…my heart goes out to you both. I do hope the support is in place to give your son the expert understanding he requires to help him through…be strong, be brave… my oldest daughter grew up with ‘Borderline personality disorder’ not labelled until she was in her early 20’s. It was so tough for her and us trying to understand at the time. IQ in the top 2% after sitting a Mensa test. She is intellectually brilliant! Now she is happily settled, living with her partner in London and researching into Alzheimer’s for UCL in London. Many hugs and every joy for you and your son, Nadita…am I right in thinking that is your name? Every human on this earth… Such a precious unique gift… More hugs 💟

      1. Not at all, my dear. Your piece touched me and I smiled. I am so proud of my son. He’s a beautiful boy and a genius in the making. His preschool treachers can’t stop gushing about his abilities and intelligence “far ahead of his 4 years”. 🙂 He’s undergoing speech therapy and has come leaps and bounds. He is just fine, only a wee bit socially awkward particularly with kids his age. If you ask me, I think he’ll grow up to be the next Einstein. 😉

  3. … and thank you so for yours indeed this has always been a topic close to my heart. John and I worked with and cared for Autistic adults. It was sometimes challenging but oh so rewarding…I am so glad that your son’s teachers have spotted his huge potential and are guiding him in ways that he might reach this over the years. Patience and understanding to you all on your life’s journey. So glad he is making good progress and hope his speech continues to make headway. It will come when HE is ready. Most certainly brilliant things to come and of course he has such a caring and sensitive mum to nurture him. It is said that special unique children are often “placed” in the big scheme of things with carers equipped perfectly to cope. This has indeed been a thoughtful exchange, my dear. My love to you all…💟

  6. I have always hated when people judge other people and they have to label you a certain way about that person.
